The Little Things Make a Difference

2023 and 2024 Projects that fundraising is supporting

It’s easy to get excited about the big things. This year we installed a new zipline at camp and admittedly there was a lot of excitement. But most of the time it’s small things that make a difference: A conversation on the lake about God, a fun song around the campfire or the daily interactions at meals. It’s the same with our budget each year, yes big program items can be amazing, but a focus on keeping facilities in good shape and even improving the infrastructure we do have is as important to the effectiveness of camp. The following are 10 budget areas that might seem insignificant, but together we believe they are a contributing factor to the impact that Camp Kadesh provides. They may not be as exciting as a Zipline, but we can’t have an impact without them.

Life Jackets and Paddles

$7,000 to Replace Life jackets in 2024

There is nothing more essential to safety on the waterfront than our life jackets (PFDs). Of all the things that see high levels of wear and tear, life jackets lead the way. In 2023 we replaced some of our jackets, but we would like to replace the rest of them in 2024.

Dining Hall Floor

There are very few places at camp that see more traffic than the dining hall. Three meals and a snack each day. On rainy days it becomes the space for all sorts of indoor games and even a campfire circle. The flooring is still the original tiles that were put in many years ago and even though we work hard to keep it looking good it really needs to be replaced soon. Not exactly small, but less than... exciting.

Computers and Technology

Technology is not always the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of summer camp. Today computers, technology, and internet infrastructure are a significant part of making each week of camp happen. Online registration, team collaboration on program planning, and development all happen on computers. We also rely on over 20 handheld radios for communication around camp.

Cabin Upgrades and Repairs

We’re continuing to pour resources into making sure our cabins are in the very best shape for our campers. Yearly projects include upgrading and painting the interiors, replacement of roofs, upgrading electrical, adding ventilation, and replacement of old mattresses.

Boat Maintenance & New Boat Lift

Boats are a big part of the draw to Camp Kadesh. Boats can also be a big cost of running camp, especially keeping boats in top shape. In 2024 we would like to add one more boat lift to reduce our boats coming in and out of the water daily.

Kitchen Upgrades

The kitchen is one of the most important parts of camp. There is nothing we do more times in a day than eat. Our kitchen staff do an amazing job feeding over 250 people daily. We want to work to upgrade and improve the equipment the kitchen uses. Some specifics are: steam tables for serving, and upgrades to some older ovens and equipment. We also want to install sliding doors to close off the kitchen space.

yearly Program Equipment replacements

Kids play hard and things wear out. Balls get worn down, arrows break, supplies are used up. It’s just part of camp. These little things add up.

$10,000 yearly materials and supplies

Insurance

Insurance. It’s assumed we have it, but often is hard to imagine how much it is part of the cost of running camp. The (possibly) surprising detail is that much of our insurance just covers our buildings in case they burn down or are damaged by some sort of storm. It’s not a big part of actively running our programs, but it a big chunk of our expenses each year.

$50,000 Total coverage of Insurance

Janitorial Supplies

There’s a lot of dirt at camp and we spend a lot of time cleaning. Dishes, toilets, and floors are just the start of the list of things needed to be cleaned many times daily. It’s a big operational expense to buy the supplies needed to keep things clean.

$15,000 Annual expense

Signs and banners

We have been slowly working at adding signage. Signs to help campers find their way around camp. Signs with instructions for activities. Signs on individual cabins.

Every Dollar of support makes a difference

Each of these areas are the little things that add cost to the price of camp. We work hard to hold off on making purchases and work to make resources extend as far as possible. Your end-of-year donation will help make a difference. Donations at this time of year help us decide what projects are feasible and what projects should wait until there is money available.

This year we are currently about $90,000 dollars behind budget for our operations. Some of this is a result of having fewer campers this summer due to a lower number of available staff. (We begin our hiring process for staff right now in early December) We have held off on some projects to keep expenses in line with current revenue.
